Walk the Swannington Incline - Sunday 2nd September 10am and 12 noon. Meet at Snibston No 3 Coal Mine, Spring Lane, Swannington, LE67 8QR. This is an opportunity to walk in the steps of Robert Stephenson on a guided tour of the whole length of the Swannington Incline at the western end of his 1832 Leicester and Swannington Railway. This railway was the catalyst for the expansion of the North West Leicestershire coalfield and the creation of the town of Coalville. Admire the amazing work of the navvies who moved thousands of tons of material to dig out the cutting and create the embankment at the bottom of the Incline. The return journey is up a steep hill. Califat Coal Mine Tours - Sunday 2nd September 2pm and 3pm. Meet at Califat coal mine, near Hough Mill, St George's Hill, Swannington, LE67 8QW. Join Leicestershire Industrial History Society and Swannington Heritage Trust for a tour of the 1855-1873 Califat coal mine. Explore two engine house complexes, the miners' cottages and an 18th century haystack boiler. Learn about the latest finds from the excavation team. FREE. Archives Group - Mondays 3rd and 17th September, 7pm. Join us at Swannington Village Hall to digitise and catalogue the deeds, wills, letters and photographs that record Swannington's history.

Historic Main Street Guided Walk - Tuesday 4th September 7pm. Meet at Swannington Primary School Car Park, LE67 8QJ. From a shop where you could buy gunpowder with your groceries, to a Quaker Meeting House where the Beaumonts had George Fox arrested the history of Main Street, Swannington is full of interest. Weekend Volunteers - Saturday 8th September 10am. Meet at Snibston No 3 Coal Mine, Spring Lane, Swannington, LE67 8QR. Join us coppicing hazels or raking the newly cut grass and removing it so that we can encourage wild flowers.

Coleorton Village History

Trevor has published yet another interesting book on the history of Coleorton. This one is based on newspaper articles from 1776 to 1951 and does have some very interesting information, which is not included in the other books. The book is on sale at Coleorton Post office and is priced at £13 (it has 334 pages, so is quite big).
